Written and composed by France Levasseur-Ouimet and performed by Chorale Saint-Jean under the direction of Laurier Fagnan, Elles s’appelaient Marie is a historical and musical work of rare intensity and historical importance.

Recorded in April 2024 at the Arden Theatre before a sold-out audience, this audio and video creation traces a century of Franco-Albertan history through the eyes and legacy of pioneering women who, at the time, all bore the name of Marie.

The disc and film include 16 songs, dramatic narration and hundreds of historical photos that together pay tribute to the strength, memory and resilience of early Francophones settlers.
